On a cold but blessedly sunny and dry October morning Pat Sutton, of the extremely well known and respected Rossut Beagle kennels, gave us a knowledgeable and fascinating demonstration of the similarities and differences in movement between horses and dogs. We were looking, of course, particularly at the trot since that is the pace used in the dog show ring.
 |
Thanks to the generously given help of many owners Pat was able to show us, and to discuss with us too, the physical characteristics of many different types and breeds of both dog and horse and to explain how the conformation of each affected their movement. We also were delightfully shown, by a beautiful little Lusitano mare whose rider had dressed in Arabic style to emphasise to us that the breed has it's origins in Barbary, how temperment too can affect movement. I didn't see many moments when her feet were actually touching the ground at all because she was enjoying herself so much !
We were shown how to recognise an upright shoulder, a shoulder set on too far forward, a short upper arm, and how all of these in their many and varied permutations affect the topline and the movement of the dog. Over angulation behind with the resulting inclination to over reaching and 'scuttling' was demonstrated and discussed, as was angle of croup and its possible effect on hind action and tail carriage. |
Pat brought forward for us examples dogs and horses to show differences in the shape of the ribcage and went on to explain and show and to discuss with us how these different body shapes affect movement and centre of gravity.

It was an absolutely fascinating day. We were all made very welcome by Pat and her staff and were fed and watered so very well by the extremely hard working committee of the South Eastern Hound Club, to whom a great many thanks are due. Pip Buswell

This event was held on Saturday, 4th April 2009, we were the first non-championship show society to stage this seminar. It was an extremely successful seminar and thanks must go to the popular Accredited Trainers, Gerald King and Annette Oliver-Wyles, for making this acheivement possible.
